Animal Management Rescues Goslings on Highway

GRANVILLE COUNTY ANIMAL MANAGEMENT: Five wayward goslings recently led Animal Control Officer David Perez on a low-speed wild goose chase on Interstate 85. Animal Management had received reports from multiple drivers reporting a frantic family of Canada geese attempting to cross Interstate Highway 85 near Exit 204 in Oxford. By the time Officer Perez arrived on the scene, the adult geese had flown away but the five goslings had been left stranded in the highway median. Perez was able to safely retrieve each gosling and carry them to safety, but the adult geese could not be located. Knowing that it was not safe to leave the geese by the side of the highway, Perez contacted the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission who referred the goslings to a local rehabber. The goslings will eventually be released back into the wild once it is safe to do so.

Granville County Animal Management thanks Officer Perez for his quick response and diligence in getting these goslings to safety and thanks the motorists who reported seeing these animals in distress and potentially
creating a dangerous traffic hazard.

The Granville County Animal Shelter is located at 515 New Commerce Drive, Oxford. The public hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to capturing wayward goslings, Animal Management facilitates the adoption of pets in their custody.
